President's Message
Bob Moskal, C.P.M., Philadelphia Housing Authority

'In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity'
Albert Einstein

Well ladies and gentlemen its Showtime. The time has come for PMAP to showcase our organization and the Philadelphia region. For the first time in our history, we will be hosting the ISM conference from Sunday, April 25th, through Wednesday, April 28th. It’s time to step up to the plate and be passionate about purchasing.

The ISM conference offers a wide variety of educational sessions. You still have time to register and take advantage of this opportunity that’s right at your doorstep. Don’t let your career flat line. In today’s work climate, being 'good enough' is just not enough. Take the time to invest in yourself.

Equally noteworthy for April are the seminars and the dinner meeting presentation led by Dr. Brian Long. We’re encouraging you to come to the April dinner meeting with a member from your staff or someone you work with in another department. By introducing them to PMAP, you acknowledge the role they play in the company and the benefits of teamwork.

So don’t hold back, make the most of it. We have the convergence of quality courses and convenience. You can still register for the ISM conference and you can improve the development of members on your supply management team. So spring into action. Otherwise you may be left with a sad reaction when your boss does his/her imitation of Donald Trump.

PMAP Golf Outing - April 28
Calling golfers of all skill levels. Mark your calendar for April 28. We tee off at 1:00 (plenty of time to get to the course from the ISM Conference-just 6 miles from the Convention Center) for the PMAP 2004 Golf Outing. Using the Scramble format, we will play the Olde Course at Cobbs Creek at 72nd & Landsdowne Ave in Philadelphia. This course is rated as the '6th best municipal course in America' by Golf Week. Your fee of $65 includes a cart and picnic style dinner (hot dogs, hamburgers, etc.) after the round while the judges determine the winners and the prizes are given out.

The cause is worthy -  the PMAP Education Fund. Prizes will be given in a number of categories. Guests are welcome and vendor sponsorships are encouraged. Check out the course at www.golfphilly.com. Read the history of the course and designer, Hugh Wilson (of Marion-East and Pine Valley fame!) It even tells you how to play each hole! What a great way to start the golf season as well as a relaxing afternoon after the rigors of four days of conferencing. Register today at www.napm-phila.org

Golf sponsor opportunities are still available - but don't wait for them to sell-out!
You may
Sponsor a hole ($200/hole) or Donate raffle prizes (minimum value/prize-$25) or Logo give-aways for each golfer (sleeve of balls, towels, hats, tees, markers-estimated number-50). Donations of $200 value or more will entitle the Sponsor to one complimentary round of golf in the outing. Just complete and return the attached form.

The implementation of many other purchasing techniques such as partnering, just-in-time inventory, single sourcing, E.D.I., continuous improvement, and supplier certification make a positive approach to negotiation, an indispensable prerequisite. For further information about the seminar, please visit the web page at http://www.mmii.org/negforcr.html

Cosponsored PMAP Seminar - Practical Purchasing Negotiations
Sheraton Park Ridge; 480 Gulph Road, King of Prussia, PA 19406
Times:8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Fees: $245 - All Participants
Instructor: Dr. Brian G. Long, C.P.M. For biographical sketch, contact
http://www.mmii.org/brian.html

The 'Practical Purchasing Negotiations' seminar is designed for the purchaser who prefers a 'hand-on' approach to negotiations. It is designed to be a sequel to the 'Negotiation for Cost Reduction' seminar or to the 'Purchasing Negotiations' seminar offered in previous years, although others who are looking for a more practical approach to negotiation training will benefit as well. The program focuses on negotiation strategies and tactics, and features several negotiation simulations ranging from one-on-one to comprehensive team simulations. Therefore, the emphasis of the program is on practical team exercises rather than lecture. Critiques provide feedback for improvement of all phases of the negotiation process from planning to execution. For further information about the seminar, please visit the web page at http://www.mmii.org/ppneg.html

To register, contact Marketing and Management Institute, Inc. at (800) 999-1531. For fax registration, a registration form can be printed from: http://www.mmii.org/registration.html
